Understanding Hay Fever

Hay fever (allergic rhinitis) is an IgE-mediated allergic reaction to airborne pollen or other environmental allergens. It commonly causes sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes and throat, and may significantly impair quality of life during high-pollen seasons.

Symptoms occur when the immune system overreacts to harmless particles, releasing histamine and other mediators that trigger inflammation in the nose, eyes and airways.

  • Sneezing and a runny nose
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Postnasal drip
  • Fatigue

Causes and Triggers

The main triggers are tree, grass and weed pollens, which vary seasonally. Mould spores and other allergens can also provoke symptoms. Weather influences pollen counts; dry, windy days often have higher airborne pollen levels.

Other factors such as air pollution, smoke and indoor allergens (dust mites, pet dander) can worsen symptoms.

  • Tree pollen (spring)
  • Grass pollen (late spring–summer)
  • Weed pollen (late summer)
  • Mould spores
  • Dust mite exposure

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Hay fever typically presents with nasal symptoms and allergic conjunctivitis. Diagnosis is clinical but allergy testing (skin prick tests or specific IgE) can identify responsible allergens and guide immunotherapy decisions.

Treatment Options

Management includes avoidance where possible, pharmacotherapy and immunotherapy for long-term modification of disease. Non-drowsy antihistamines relieve sneezing and itching, while intranasal corticosteroids are effective for nasal congestion and inflammation. Eye drops treat allergic conjunctivitis. Immunotherapy is considered for persistent, severe symptoms.

  • Oral antihistamines (non-drowsy)
  • Intranasal corticosteroid sprays
  • Anti-allergy eye drops
  • Saline nasal irrigation
  • Allergen immunotherapy

Prevention and Seasonal Tips

Reduce exposure by monitoring pollen forecasts, keeping windows closed on high-pollen days, using pollen filters in vehicles, showering after outdoor exposure, and starting preventive nasal sprays before the season if you have predictable symptoms.
