What Is Almotriptan?

Almotriptan is a prescription migraine-relief medication from the triptan family. It is used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura. Almotriptan works quickly to reduce headache pain, nausea, light sensitivity and other migraine-related symptoms.

It is most effective when taken at the onset of a migraine attack, helping many individuals return to their normal routine sooner.

How Does Almotriptan Work?

Almotriptan works by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain, causing narrowed blood vessels and reduced inflammation around nerves involved in migraine pain.

This leads to:

  • Reduced the severity of migraine pain
  • Improved sensitivity to light and sound
  • Decreased nausea
  • Faster recovery from migraine symptoms

How to Take Almotriptan

Almotriptan is taken orally and should be used as soon as migraine symptoms begin. The standard adult dose is 12.5 mg.

  • Take one tablet at the start of a migraine
  • Do not exceed two tablets in 24 hours
  • Wait at least 2 hours between doses if a second tablet is required
  • Swallow with water, with or without food

Almotriptan should not be used as a preventive treatment. It is intended for acute migraine relief only.

Who Can Use Almotriptan?

Almotriptan is suitable for most adults who experience episodic migraines. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with:

  • Heart disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • History of stroke or circulation problems
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
  • Allergy to almotriptan or other triptans
  • Age under 18 or over 65 (unless advised by a clinician)

Side Effects of Almotriptan

Most side effects are mild and temporary. Common reactions include:

  • Tingling or warmth sensations
  • Dizziness or sleepiness
  • Nausea
  • Muscle tightness
  • Fatigue

Serious side effects, such as chest pain or severe dizziness, require immediate medical evaluation.

Precautions When Using Almotriptan

  • Do not take Almotriptan within 24 hours of another triptan
  • Avoid use alongside certain antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs) without advice
  • Limit alcohol during migraine treatment
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose
  • Seek medical advice if migraines become frequent or change in pattern
