What Is Aldara?

Aldara (Imiquimod 5% cream) is a prescription-only topical treatment used to boost the skin’s natural immune response. It is commonly prescribed for genital warts (caused by the human papillomavirus – HPV), superficial basal cell carcinoma, and actinic keratosis. Aldara helps the body fight abnormal skin growths and viral infections by stimulating the immune system activity directly at the application site.

Aldara is not a chemical wart remover. Instead, it trains the immune system to recognise and destroy infected or abnormal cells, making it a highly effective option for long-term clearance.

How Does Aldara Work?

Aldara activates immune cells in the skin to release cytokines, proteins that help fight viruses and abnormal tissue. This immune stimulation gradually removes warts and treats precancerous or damaged skin cells.

Benefits include:

  • Reduction or removal of genital warts
  • Prevention of wart recurrence
  • Non-invasive treatment method
  • Immune-based targeting of abnormal cells

How to Use Aldara

Aldara must be applied exactly as directed by a healthcare professional. The frequency depends on the condition being treated:

  • Genital warts – apply 3 times weekly (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, Friday) before bedtime. Wash off after 6–10 hours.
  • Actinic keratosis – apply once daily, 3 times weekly for 4 weeks.
  • Superficial basal cell carcinoma – apply 5 times weekly for 6 weeks.

General guidance:

  • Wash and dry the area before application
  • Apply a thin layer only
  • Wash your hands before and after use
  • Avoid sexual contact while the cream is on the skin

Who Can Use Aldara?

Aldara is suitable for most adults, but may not be appropriate for individuals with:

  • Immune system disorders
  • Severe inflammatory skin conditions
  • Allergy to Imiquimod
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (medical advice required)

Side Effects of Aldara

Mild to moderate skin reactions are expected and show that the cream is working. Common side effects include:

  • Redness or irritation
  • Flaking or peeling skin
  • Burning or itching
  • Scabbing or crusting
  • Headache or fatigue (less common)

Severe inflammation or open sores may require treatment breaks. Consult your prescriber if symptoms become uncomfortable.

  • Avoid applying to broken or severely inflamed skin
  • Do not use more cream than prescribed
  • Avoid sun exposure during treatment
  • Do not cover the area with airtight dressings
